choosing a backup solution for your website
Local Backups
If you have a server that is utilizing a web hosting panel such as cPanel or Plesk, you should enable local backups from within these panels. A “local backup” means that the backup is stored directly on the server itself.
Local backups can be useful if you have many clients who may need to restore content themselves from the hosting panel(s) or do not have much content to back up.
These backups are typically included within the hosting panel license fees, so there is no additional charge for these local hosting panel backups; however, they do take up disk space on the server. Generally, these backups offer some options for the number of backups to retain and what to back up so be mindful of the necessary and available disk space is advised.
If additional disk space is required for local backups, there are options such as Liquid Web’s Cloud Block Storage devices or resizing the server if the server in question is a Virtual Private Server.
One last consideration is that these backups generally are not full server images meaning not all the files and folders are backed up. Liquid Web’s Support Team is available if you have questions or need any assistance with these backups.

Remote Backups
Local backups are an excellent first step in ensuring your data’s safety. Still, remote off-server backups are just as critical if not more so as hardware failure or other critical events can risk the integrity of your data. Depending on whether you have a cloud-based infrastructure or a dedicated server, Liquid Web offers several solutions.
Cloud Backups
If you have a virtual private server, then there are several options that can be used to back up these servers. The first is the Liquid Web Cloud Server Backups.
Liquid Web Cloud Backups are entirely remote, providing you with peace of mind that your content is backed up to a safe, secure location, without utilizing the valuable disk space on the server. Liquid Web Cloud Backups are full server images. This means they contain a full snapshot of every single file, directory, database, etc. within each of the daily backups.
While there is no external access to these backups, the restoration process for these backups is exclusively handled by a trained and dedicated team at Liquid Web. This team specializes in data restoration, ensuring your data is safe before, during, and after the backups taken.
These options can be enabled for each server in your manage.liquidweb.com dashboard. The Liquid Web Cloud Backups are taken daily, but the data usage is calculated hourly to ensure accurate invoicing for servers with fluctuating disk space utilization.
